Charlie

Charlie meets Chris McCandless in a restroom when Chris McCandless is staying in Bullhead, Arizona and offers McCandless to stay in an RV in the land where he is living. Charlie remembers Chris McCandless as a nice guy although he seem strange and intense and always talking about Alaska. Charlie and McCandless relationship wasn't a good one although Charlie gave him a place to stay. So, by Charlie giving McCandless a place to stay McCandless decided to stay in Arizona two more months.

Jan Burres & Bob

Summer of 1990, Jan Burres and her husband, Bob, cross paths with Chris McCandless alongside of the U.S. Highway 101 when Chris is searching for berries that he can eat. Jan and Bob offer to give him a ride in their van, believing he looked pitiful, and to buy him a meal, believing he looked hungry as well. Jan and Bob drove from one town to the next selling knick knacks at flea markets and swap meets for a living. The fact that they were rubber tramps, as was Chris, gave him a closer and easier relationship with both of them. Losing connection and affection with her own son, Jan cared for McCandless as if he were her own.

After camping for a week once they reached Orick beach, McCandless drifted off. Jan Burres and Bob didn't believe they'd ever contact McCandless after their disperse, but to their surprise, McCandless sent a postcard every month or so for the next two years, showing his appreciation and interest towards the two. McCandless developed a deep connection with the two, leaving them devastated when the news of his death arrived.

Ronald Franz

Ronald (Ron) Franz played a significant role in McCandless's journey and had left a mark on Chris as Chris did to Ron. The eighty year-old former soldier offered Chris a ride, while he was hitchhiking, from Salt City, California to Grand Junction, Colorado. During this momentary time period, McCandless grew a liking to McCandless and enjoyed his company. They sent letters to one another and even reunited when McCandless would visit. It came to point where Ronald felt Chris was a son to him. This could be because of the loss of Ron's family in a car accident but, regardless, he really liked him.

Ron had suggested that Chris finally get his life in order but McCandless mentioned that he already had a college education and he chose to live by the way he does. Afraid that his family would end after he passed, Ron even offered McCandless to be apart of his family, but feeling uncomfortable about the idea, he declined. Chris advised him how to get more out of life through letter, but once Franz was notified that McCandless had passed, he lost faith in God, baffled that something as horrific could have occurred to a bright spirit, and went back to drinking.

Gaylord Stuckey

Gaylord Stuckey played part in helping Chris McCandless achieve his goal. The sixty-three year old man encountered McCandless when Stuckey was on his way to a dealership in Fairbanks. McCandless asked for a ride but it was against Stuckey's company rules to offer rides to hitchhikers. After conversating with McCandless and coming to the realization that he was not like the rest of the ordinary hitchhikers, he drives McCandless to Fairbanks. On their way, McCandless really opens up to Stuckey about his family and mentions his Alaska Plan and his desire to live off the land. Stuckey buys Chris a bag of rice for the road and they eventually arrive at the University of Atlanta at Fairbanks McCandless wants to visit the library at the University to figure out which plants will be edible along his journey. Having more knowledge and being more aware on the seasons, Stuckey points out that his plan not such a smart idea, recognizing that the ground it still piled with snow. Chris, being the stubborn man he is, ignored his suggestion and headed off, promising to send Stuckey a letter once he returns from Alaska. Stuckey also suggested McCandless to reach his parents and inform him of his current destination but Chris, once again, disregards his advice. 

Wayne Westerberg

Wayne Westerberg comes to meet Chris McCandless in 1990, after picking him up hitchhiking in Montana. While meeting Wayne Westerberg, Chris McCandless seem intense and talkative about his plans to hitchhike to Saco hot springs. The day Westerberg picked up Chris McCandless, it was raining rather hard and Westerberg offered Chris McCandless his nearby trailer where he could stay. Chris McCandless accepts and ends up staying for three days before going off on his journey once again. Before McCandless departs Westerberg mentions he owns a grain elevator in Carthage, South Dakota and if he ever needed a job to go to him and he'll give him a job. So a few weeks later, McCandless arrives in Carthage and begins working for Westerberg in a psychically challenging job. McCandless stayed with Westerberg until Westerberg was thrown in jail. In all McCandless got to be close to Westerberg for all his generosity towards him. Westerberg continued to receive postcards from McCandless until he recieved his last postcard in 1192.

Introduction

Throughout the journey Chris McCandless pursued, he met handfuls of people have who helped him survive the wild adventure that awaited him. With the lack of preparation and the countless dedication he had to strive to his life goal, he achieves to go into depth of his in inner-self and encounters the people that have shaped his own being.
